Back to Business

So I finally got internet in my room again!  In celebration, I made some hummus.  Hopefully, with things getting back to normal interwebz-wise, I will be back to regular posting.  :)

So.  Happy.

Of course, because one technology is back, another one has to go out.  Enter me dropping my cell phone in the washing machine.  FML.  Oh well.  I was due for an upgrade (just this week, thank goodness!)  However, I was going to give my brother my old phone since he dropped his fancy-schmancy phone on our concrete driveway a couple months ago and has been working with a phone with 75% of the screen messed up.  Poor guy, he and his girlfriend text all the time.  So I’m letting it dry out, and hopefully it’ll still work…

Anyway.

Just glad to be back!  :D

Back on Track

This past week nothing has sounded good to me.  I love food, so this is weird.

Unfortunately, my internet has also been out of whack so it’s been really hard trying to post regularly, and I’ve been so stressed out I just haven’t done it at all.

But this morning I had a fantastic smoothie, and I’m so glad I did.  I haven’t made a smoothie in forever, so it was like old times!  ;)

Banana Bread Green Monster

1.5 frozen bananas
1 c. almond milk
3 c. spinach
1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder
1/4 t. vanilla extract
1/2 t. cinnamon
Vitamin C
Kelp
Optional: dash of water to thin smoothie

After I finished this, I realized that it smelled like banana bread.  I think it’s the cinnamon that made it that way.  Either way, it was delicious!

Jocalat Chocolate Coffee Review

Today my snack at work was a Jocalat Chocolate Coffee bar.  The only other Jocalat bar I’ve had is the Mint Chocolate I had a few weeks ago.  If you remember, I really didn’t like it.  The mint was gross (and I usually love mint chocolate things) and I didn’t enjoy the bar at all.

Well, different story second time around.  The Chocolate Coffee bar was quite good.  I enjoyed it, although as with all Larabar products, the bar is quite small for packing ~11 grams of fat.  This always helps with satiety, but sometimes you don’t want that much fat in such a little bar.  But as a quick power snack for work, it works quite well.

Although it tasted good, if you had given me this bar without the packaging, I would not have guessed that it was flavored with coffee.  And it could have tasted more like chocolate, as well.  A lot of Larabars taste like what they are “supposed” to taste like.  This one was good, but I would have guessed it was just date flavored, with a hint of chocolate.  I couldn’t tell it was coffee flavored at all.

All in all, I would probably buy this one again, although only if it was on sale.

Thursday aka Caturday

[Edit]: I have spent so long trying to get this stupid post to not have tiny font.  I don’t know what I did wrong, but it will not let me change the text size!  It’s making me angry, so I’m just going to quit while I’m ahead and avoid deleting this entire post. :evil:

Moving on.  :cool:  Thursday morning I woke up at 7:45 am after falling asleep with my lights on.  Oof.  I always wake up feeling really strange when I do that.  I got on the computer for a little while, then decided to just watch some TV.  I keep meaning to get up early anyway.  Not that it actually worked…given that I fell asleep for a couple hours and woke up right around 10:45 am.  When I woke up I was so loopy – I think I woke up during a deep sleep cycle and I felt drugged.

So the channel I woke up to that morning was showing some reruns of Supernatural!  :D  One of my FAVORITE shows ever.  ♥  And the episode I woke up to the end of was the end of the one where Sam gets stabbed and dies in Dean’s arms!  It was a weird and sad way to wake up, but I really enjoyed it.  Does that make me creepy?  haha!

After I really woke up I took 2 cups spinach
 
 
and blended it with 1 cup of my carrot juice
 
 
And had this: an instant nutrition packed vegetable green monster.
 
 
After drinking this, I was still watching TV for a while.  Gus decided to come and visit with me.  He is so weird sometimes.  Sometimes he is really affectionate and needy – he has to sit on your lap.  Other times he’s the typical “disdainful cat.”  That morning he was too cute!  First he lay halfway over me and put himself facefirst into my lap – hilarious, by the way.
 
 
Then he decided to spoon with me a bit.
 
 
Now if we could just keep him from drooling as much as he does!
 
For lunch I had 2 slices of toasted bread.  On one I put some potato salad with honey mustard vinaigrette, mustard, and sprouts.  On the other I had vegenaise and tomato with pepper.
 
 
On the side I had some leftover sauteed zucchini, onions, and tomato that I made the other day.  It was almost better cold than hot!
 
I puttered around the rest of the day until it came time to get ready to go to work at 4 pm.  I wasn’t hungry (that lunch really filled me up!) but I knew I’d get hungry at work.
 
I took 1 cup of almond milk, 3 Tablespoons of Ovaltine, and 1 scoop of my protein powder to make a “power snack” for work.
 
 
I also hurriedly put together some protein overnight oats to take with me.  No supplements or extras this time – just 1/2 c. of rolled oats, 1 c. almond milk, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 scoop protein powder.  But, silly me, I forgot any sort of sweetener!  I usually will put agave nectar or honey in this, but it totally slipped my mind!  I tasted it before my break at work, and it wasn’t unpalatable or anything, but I definitely prefer it a little sweeter.
 
All day at work I was yawning and tired.  I had my chocolate protein almond milk, which perked me up a bit.  My break was around 7:30 pm and I was hungry.  I headed over to Bloomingfoods and picked up a peanut butter chocolate chip bar, which I crumbled into my unsweetend oats.
Oh. My.
 
The picture doesn’t do it justice (partially cause I took it in very poor lighting and my break was almost over so I was rushing).  The bar made it sweet, a little crunchy, a little crumbly.  Just absolutely delicious.  I need to make these bars myself and replicate this.  I am so glad I made that little mistake this afternoon.
 
I also wanted coffee.  I didn’t realize it until everyone at work was talking about coffee and I thought about how long it had been since I’d had real coffee.  I went over to Soma (a local downtown coffee shop) and picked up 12 oz of Blackbeard’s Ghost (or something like that).  It’s a super dark roast, filled with caffeine and flavor.  I put some 1/2 and 1/2 (bad, I know!) and 2 splenda packets in it.
 
 
It paired perfectly with my oats.  :)

The Theme of the Day is Carrot

This morning I got up after spending the night with a friend.  We had a great time out last night, despite the 3rd band backing out of the Battle of the Bands we went out to see (the band we wanted to see in the first place!).  It was more like Duel of the Bands.  So we left, and headed over to a different bar to meet up with a good friend I haven’t seen in a while.  Ahh, $2 Tuesdays.

On the way there I met up with one of my Psychology professors! Okay, picture this guy: a big black guy with dreadlocks all down his back, wearing a New York Yankees jersey and head bandanna.  Yeah, that’s what he wore to class everyday too. And he always talked about going out and drinking at the bars.  Before I turned 21 I always thought, “My barhopping days will not be complete until I see Merv at the bars.”

Well, they are now!  :D  And because I actually talked to him after class, and he was nice enough to let me take a test early when I told him I was going on vacation – he remembers me and my name!! Too funny, and it makes me happy.

After a lil’ bit of a crazy night out, I wanted something light and fresh first thing this morning.  I picked up this from the grocery store on my way home.

I love the ingredient list: carrots

It was a great light start to the day, with just 70 calories per 8 oz, 2 grams of protein, and no added sugar, no fat.

Lunch was intense.

Cucumber, tomato, red onion, and sprouts on whole wheat bread with Vegenaise and a little bit of Annie’s Honey Mustard Vinaigrette Lite (which may be my new love!).  With 40 cal. and 3 g. of fat per 2 Tablespoons – much better than many other dressings, and it tastes great!  I usually can’t stand the taste of light dressings.  Also with 1/2 avocado w/lemon juice and salt.

I love opening new bottles of vegenaise.  :)

I was so full after this lunch.  I didn’t need to eat for quite a while – which was good because I was glued to my TV for the Germany vs. Spain World Cup game! Spain won, 1-0, and rightly so.  Germany just wasn’t moving fast enough, and Spain took possession much more often.  They seemed to just…want it more.  Great fun to watch!  They put in Fernando Torres towards the end…be still my heart!  ;)

And look who insisted on watching some of the game with me…

I went to dinner at McAlister’s with a couple friends.

I got basically 1/2 grilled cheese sandwich (with pizza sauce and tomatoes) and a Caesar side salad.  With pickles (1 is mine, the other 2 are J and D’s haha!  They don’t like pickles).

To follow up this, I couldn’t resist McAlister’s carrot cake.  This was sooooo good.  And huuuuuuge.  *slight regret*

So delicious.  J, D, and I determined we are going to plan a day trip to eat at The Cheesecake Factory sometime soon.  I’ve never been, but they spent at least 10 minutes fangirling out over the food there, while I was eating my carrot cake.  :)

All in all, a very good day.  If I feel hungry later on I’ll probably take a glass of carrot juice and blend it with ~1 cup spinach and a serving of my protein powder as a light end to the day.

Uruguay vs. Ghana

This morning I got up at 9:30 am (I don’t work Fridays) to watch the 10 am Netherlands vs. Brazil game, which was fun.  Brazil (ranked #1!) lost 2-1.  Although there were tons of dives and embellishments, in hopes for fouls.  And that’s never fun to watch.  Sort of the “dirty” part of soccer, IMO.  It bothers my brother too (a high school varsity soccer player since his sophomore year).  He always just rolled, and popped right back up like a stuntman, :) when if he stayed down the ref would probably have counted it a foul.  But a lot of the time, the player isn’t hurt, especially if they just got tapped and fell over.

During halftime of the game I made breakfast.  My morning smoothie.

1 frozen banana
1 T. cocoa powder
1 T. raw almond butter
1 T. peanut butter
Spirulina
~1 c. spinach
Almond milk (enough to mix, ~1.5 cups)

I looked up the protein information for almond and peanut butter.  A serving size is 2 tablespoons, and 7 grams of protein.  So my smoothie had about 7 g. protein, which made it filling (along with all the fat from the nut butters, too!  Good fats, but still…)

I ran an errand today, and picked up some Teva flipflops that I’ve been wanting to get for a while.  Two of my friends already have them in the same style, so I didn’t necessarily want to copy them, but I love the style, and I was getting very tired of just having my regular wide strapped Teva flipflops.  I also picked up some generic protein powder that I’m not super excited about.  I really want to get some rice and/or hemp protein powder.  I’ll probably do another post about those and what I think about them sometime soon.

Moving on to this afternoon, and the Uruguay vs. Ghana game.

Uggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Ridiculousness.  Basically, they tied 1-1 during regular play time.  Went into overtime, and Ghana was *so* close to scoring – they got the ball past the keeper, and there was a frenzy.  Ghana would have scored, aka the ball was going over the goal line if Suarez (Uruguay) didn’t knock the ball out of the goal line with his hand.  I think anyone who knows anything about soccer knows that this is a big no-no.  So he got a red card, and Ghana got a penalty kick.  It would have won the game, but they missed it.  The score was still tied and they had to go to penalty kicks.

I hate penalty kicks.  With a passion.  They are the worst possible way to lose a game.  Ghana scored two, then Uruguay scored two.  Then Ghana missed, then Uruguay missed.  Then Ghana missed, and if Uruguay made their last goal they’d win, and if they lost they’d be tied.  Tied to the last goal kick – Uruguay – and they made it in.

If Uruguay had gotten a goal in during regular play time, or even overtime, it wouldn’t have hurt nearly as badly as losing to the last penalty kick of a game that would have been over at the end of overtime if someone hadn’t effing knocked the ball out with his hand!!!!!!!

I’m Back!

Hello!  Sorry I’ve been awol lately.  I’ve been forgetting to take pictures of my food, and going out with friends a lot.  :)  Also, a lot of my time has been taken up by the World Cup!!! <3

Anyway, on to food and real life!  Wednesday morning my mom and I drove up to visit my sister and her kids.  She and her husband are training for a triathlon in Denver this fall, and they usually do a half-marathon every year!  My brother-in-law has lost 30 pounds recently and really changed his life.  I am so proud of them.  They want me to do triathlons and marathons with them.  I’m tempted…but I need to work my way up to it!

Wednesday night I had a “taco” salad.  Romaine with black beans, guacamole, a little sour cream, lots of salsa, and baked tortilla chips. It was wonderful.  We also had a long discussion about my vegetarianism and food choices.  I read in all these blogs about people asking, “Where do you get your protein?” and I thought it was weird because no one had ever asked me that. Well, my brother-in-law was the first to do just that.  He’s working on building muscle, and the diet regimen he is on is very protein heavy.  I think I made a good case for myself.

We also talked about the social aspect of meals.  This is important to me; I always sit down for family dinners even if I’m not eating everything my family is.  My B-I-L’s sister never eats with them, and he takes it personally, since they do try to accomodate her.  It hurts him that she distances herself in that way.  I think he felt better when I especially focused on the fact that I am choosing this for myself, and not forcing it on others.  I don’t ask for meals to be changed for me.  At dinner, I just chose not to have the taco meat.  I don’t preach, and I don’t talk about it unless someone asks me to.  I am not to the point of wanting to “convert” others.  I want to be part of my family, mealtimes included.

And the sweet thing is, after I got home I got an email that my sister forwarded to me from my B-I-L.  He went online and found a vegan nutrition-savvy blogger and her tips about protein intake, and sent it on to me. He didn’t berate me or attack me for my vegetarianism and move toward veganism (even though he doesn’t agree with me), and is just trying to help me be as healthy as I can.  He did ask some hard questions, but he didn’t judge me for my food choices, just as I don’t judge him.  :)  It made me so happy.

Thursday morning I had my overnight oats.  Since my BIL and I had talked about protein, he gave me one of his Bill Phillips Right Light Nutrition Shake in Vanilla.  I added it to 1/2 c. rolled oats and put it in the fridge.  In the morning I added about 1/2 t. cinnamon.  It was delicious!  And so filling.  And the nutritional stats are so amazing!  It’s basically a daily vitamin, plus 22 grams of protein.  I do need to get some kind of protein supplement, since I don’t think I’m getting my daily requirement, every day.  But I do pretty well most of the day, I think.

Fat free and sugar free – Free of aspartame and sucralose

Although the “sugar free” thing bothers me (since it is sweet and has maltodextrin – which is a food additive) for the most part all of the ingredients are whole and healthy.  It’s actually really impressive, and my mom was also impressed by the ingredient list.  I would buy these.  Especially in chocolate!
